rest
last summer, i was introduced to the idea of scheduling in time for "rest". this was during my missions trip in Japan last summer. the idea seemed absurb at first, because our trip was only 6 weeks long. i was expecting to spend as much time as possible doing ministry. but we were told that monday was our day of rest, that we weren't supposed to do any "ministry" work that day.
but as the trip continued, we got busier and busier. and as the days got longer and longer, and we had more and more work to do, i realized why we had a day of rest. we needed it.
it felt good to get some extra sleep (or catch up sleep) that day. i had the luxury of doing my quiet time unrushed, at my own pace. i had a chance to rest my mind, and not be thinking of what i needed to do all the time. i had time to do laundry or to cook. i had time to read, time to just sit there and think. there was time to chat with my friends. the day just refreshed me, and allowed me to be ready for another 6 days of hard work.
the idea is very biblical. God took a day of rest after 6 days of creating. He set an example for his people to follow. i think the point isn't so much which day to rest, but to have that time to rest.
since then, i've incorporated this idea of rest into my normal life. each week, i try my best to schedule in an evening to "rest". tonight was that night, and i'm grateful for it.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

i couldn't agree more. funny... john stackhouse spoke about this very topic a couple weeks ago at 10th, and he said the exact same thing. he was talkin' about resting, the sabbath, and how joy fits into all of it, and he made this comment, "Rest first, then out of the joy of your rest you do your work." makes sense, doesn't it? esp. since i know for me, i'm often thinking, "k, i can't rest until everything is finished, and then i'll have a reason to be joyful." but in reality, the craziness of life will never really end, and by not realizing that, i end up doing everything with a foul attitude. well, i hope you had a grrreat rest, bud. thanx for sharing. ~lee#3

hey Tim - thanks for the reminder cause it is necessary to have times of rest and just chill with God. I get too stressed to easily. A while back, I felt ok working sundays despite church activities cause I guess I wanted to achieve that much more respect at work. A friend firmly reminded me that not attending church affects not only my relationship with God but also my relationship with my bros and sis because I wasn't there to fellowship and neglected to share and learn about God from one another. Since then, I really value rest from work and stress from stuff. Okies - thanks - ~Mandy

great entry tim. AH! i can't believe i SAW you just a couple of days ago wahahahhaa. anyway, i agree, a day of rest is such a necessity. It calms your mind. and to me, its most important to have time to reflect, to filter through all your thoughts.

hey ^^ after prayerful consideration, i felt that yes, indeed, taking into account the distance my house is from drema's, and the distance your house is from drema's, that ride Should be worth 2 credits ;p - if that is just a confirmation of what He's spoken to your heart we'll go with that ahahah, if you're getting something different i'll go back and do more prayerful considering ;p - it may well be that i haven't learned to recognize His Voice that well yet
:*( ->woah that's starting to sound serious :*( *sigh* i am serious in that i Wonder sometimes, if it's from Him or if it's just me - i wish He spoke as clearly as He did to leslie ludy's mom more often!
anyhoo ;p i wasn't kidding about the 2 credits ;)
